    Lyrics: I hate a moral coward, one who lacks a manly spark I just detest a man afraid to go home in the dark I always spend my evening where there's women wine and song but like a man, I always bring my little wife along! I'm a member of the Midnight Crew I'm a night owl, and a wise bird too Home with the milk in the morning Singing the same old song! Rise with the moon, go to bed with the sun Early to bed, and you'll miss all the fun Bring your wife and trouble, it will never trouble you Make her a member of the Midnight Crew! The fun it doesn't stop 'til 12 on happy old Broadway So what's the use of going home, until the break of day? Now, something confidential, whisper not above a breath, I once went home at 2 AM, and scared my wife to death! I never shall forget the night I made Six Rappers' Run Although I didn't have a knife, a blackjack, or a gun I proved myself a hero of a very high degree I ran for home, and six of them, were running after me!

    SOLANGE is an opera by Gaston Salvayre to a libretto by Adolphe Aderer. Vallandri sang the title role in the world premiere. This record comes as a surprise to me, although I was familiar with her recording of the same little aria for Pathé. This one originally cut for the short lived PHONO label (whose unique matrix numbering system - a two-part number with a dot or comma in the middle, here it is "31.26" - makes their records easy to recognize among the Aspir/Idéal catalogue: No other Aspir/Idéal issues have any visible matrix number!)

    • @Onkel_Greifenklau
      @Onkel_Greifenklau 16 дней назад

      Thank you for letting me know that it is an aria from an opera. I was misled by label designating it as a "chanson montagnarde." I didn't realize it was from an opera. I now see that it is the aria "Combien j'ai douce souvenance."

      A417 appears in the runoff area. I don't know if that is a matrix number--it doesn't resemble other matrix numbers I have seen on American Zonophones. The only other marking in the runoff area is the "D" that I understand indicates that a Dennison Recording Machine was used.

    • @truesoundchris
      @truesoundchris 20 дней назад

      @@Onkel_Greifenklau Thank you! That's exactly the interesting thing: This matrix series does not fit among the normal NY Zono series (that is 4-digit without a letter) nor among any Victor or Gramo series. And Ventura isn't documented to have sung in NYC during those years. Jack Stanley and I strongly suspect the "A" stands for "Argentina" and these are Buenos Aires recordings, because some early tango records with the same type of matrix number have been found. A lot of Italian singers appeared at the Teatro Colón of course, and probably Zono took advantage of this to bolster their Italian series. If that theory holds water, the "complete" Aida on Zono is also from Buenos Aires as it has the same A-prefixed matrix numbers.

      Most sources I have found give his birthdate as 1889, which would make him 14 when he made his three records. Teatro Nuovo says: “Umberto Pini-Corsi, the tenor son of the baritone named above, is our youngest. He was born in Bologna on Dec. 25 1889, started out as a boy soprano in performances with his parents, and made his only recordings in 1904 (exact date unknown but likely before Christmas). The poor lad died of tuberculosis at just 21, after only a handful of concert and operatic appearances. It would have been fascinating to hear the mature work of a teenager who could sing 'Ecco ridente in cielo' like this.” historicaltenors.net gives this information: “Son of bass-baritone Antonio Pini-Corsi and his wife, mezzosoprano Clorinda Nistri. He studied both voice and composition, made three recordings in 1904, at age 14, and sang with his father in 1901 in a concert. He also composed one opera, and died of tuberculosis at age 21.”
